The JLPT or the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is the most
widely taken Japanese language ability test in the world.
It is administered twice yearly in many countries, every 1st Sunday of July and December.
For a schedule in your country, check here.
There are 5 different levels a test-taker can select to take
depending on his/her Japanese ability. The test taker must decide the test level
to be taken in advance (during registration, usually 3-4 months ahead of the test).
N1 - is the highest level, the most difficult
N2
N3 - the medium level
N4
N5 - the easiest level
Sample questions to gauge your level are available here.
The test is a purely written exam, multiple choice.
There is no speaking section.
The exam covers the following:
Vocabulary
Grammar
Reading comprehension
Listening (to taped conversations and answering questions about these)
Why take the JLPT?
work reasons - some jobs may require a certain JLPT level
study reasons - requiring JLPT
measurement of Japanese level.
For fun? :)
